Has Pizza Peaked? Domino's Pizza Leader Departs After Move Towards Fried Chicken.

A chief executive of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who indicated the UK might have hit pizza saturation while expanding the chain into chicken products has been replaced after conflicts with its directors.

Leadership Change

Rennie is departing after only 24 months in charge, and will be succeeded on an interim basis by the organization's chief operating officer, Nicola Frampton, while the pizza giant looks for a permanent CEO.

Rennie, who was with the company for more than two decades, had attempted to pivot Britain's largest pizza food delivery firm towards poultry-based products, commenting in a recent interview there was not “massive growth” left in the pizza sector in the UK. He observed chicken was the most rapidly expanding menu item in the international market.

Board Tensions

Reports indicate that there was tension between Rennie and the board over his strategy and business vision, although Domino's release said he was stepping down “as a joint decision”.

New Product Launch

In the autumn, Domino's launched its poultry product line – which the former chief described as a “significant new phase” for the company – and is trialling it in select stores in the North West region and the province.

While the firm is still intending to launch it across its extensive network next year as intended, it regards chicken products as an addition to its primary pizza operations.

Board Comment

Bull, the company chairman, commented: “The board believes that there are a range of possibilities to boost expansion and performance improvement in Domino's core business. We are concentrating on identifying the suitable leader to oversee the careful implementation of that development approach.”

Industry Difficulties

Recently, Domino's, which has millions of users in the British Isles, said sales declined by 1.5% in the third quarter. In August, it alerted that the food delivery sector had “intensified” as it attributed reduced spending in the lead-up to the budget and higher payroll outlays for weaker-than-expected sales and a 15% drop in six-month income.

Competitors are also struggling. Another major chain disclosed the closing of multiple locations a month ago, after the firm behind its British operations fell into administration.

Wellness Efforts

Trying to keep up with customer preferences towards healthier eating, Domino's has launched light options, such as its Thin & Crispy selection of pizzas below 400 calories as well as vegan and gluten-free options. A large pepperoni pizza has 2,311 kcals. A big margherita has 2,171 kcal, while a individual has 909 calories.

Interim Leadership

Frampton has been with Domino's since 2021, and had a background at the betting firm a well-known operator. It is believed that she is not seeking to take on the top job permanently.

Frampton stated: “The company has a multiple active expansion and efficiency programs that we will be concentrating on carrying out at a rapid rate.”

She added these included additional efforts on the organization's logistics network and menu innovation, and its loyalty scheme.

The pizza chain is also lacking a permanent finance director until March 16, when a new appointee comes aboard from the Irish cider and beer maker a well-known firm. Until then, Snow is temporary CFO.
